Talk, Share, Brag - Nissan Titan!

OK, I have been doing some research on gear ratio's for my Titan...
Turns out, to my surprise, that my '06 has a 2.94 (or 2.937:1, to be exact) ring & pinion, on a Dana 44 rear axle.

I really want to change it out, for some 3.54's, or maybe even some 3.73's. But because the spline count, on the rear drive-line yoke, is specific only to the Titan, it appears nobody makes a pinion gear/shaft to fit.

I was wondering if anyone here has successfully changed out their ring & pinion, for the taller gears that I want?

In my research, I found that the Jeep Rubicon uses the same setup, but again, it's a different spline count, and a different yoke.

One thought was to get the 3.73 gear set, buy the Rubicon yoke, and take both the yoke, & my driveline, down to a driveline shop, and have them cut the tail end of my driveline off & custom fit a new end & u-joint on my driveline, just so that I have the freedom to change out the gears to any standard set compatible with the standard Dana 44.
But before I do all that, I wanted to check here first, to see if anyone has had any experience, in this particular field...

I know some of you might be wondering... "Why?!?"

Well, think about it...

First off, if nobody here has done it, & if it works, I'll be able to share my findings with anyone here who also happens to be thinking about it...

Second, I want to really increase the towing capacity, and reduce the strain being placed on the entire drivetrain, when towing up large, long hills & steep grades...

Third, mmmm... me go FASTER!!!
Me see crappy american truck, n me REALLY stomp'm!!!
LOL

So... Any advice, guys? girls?

Superior Gear and Axle now offering ring and pinion sets for the Titan. Haven't installed them myself, but found it on their blog on their website. They haven't updated their website to reflect that they offer them, but do state it in their blog.

Thank you!

Also, I was mis-informed, it's not the pinion, that has a 32-spline setup, it's the spider gears in the carrier... So I can change out the gear set, and get the 3.73's I want, it's just the carrier itself that I'm limited with.

From the looks of things, I think I'm gonna go with the Detroit True-Trac worm gear posi, and the 3.73 ring & pinion, which I will be ordering today. I'll make another post once I receive everything, & get it all installed.

Thanks again!

Well, I ordered the parts to change out the gears, but after I talked to their sales rep, I found out that I also need the diff yoke, from a 2004/2005 Titan... I guess the gear sets are made for the '04/05 Hybrid Nissan/Dana 44's, but with that $85 yoke, the gear sets will work with '06, '07, & '08's.
They have 3.73's, 4.10's, 4.56's, and 4.88's available, which is nice to know, but for an everyday driver, I wouldn't wanna go any more than what I'm getting... the 4.10's!

He recommended that I go with the 4.10 gears, due to the size of my tires, and from the sound of it, I was sold.

Well, after I placed the order, I found out that they are located less than 5 minutes from my work!
So, I decided to just let them do all the work, and save myself the headaches...

I'm taking my truck to them Tomorrow!!!
Yay!!!
I can't wait to see what the difference will be, once it's all done!!!

I'll reply again, once it's all done!

I'm interested in following your path! What size tires do you have? Also, what is the total cost of the gear swap and the diff yoke plus the install? Also, does the true trac fix the spider gear problem?

OK, here's some of what I've done to my truck:

Rims & tires: KMC Rockstars & Nitto Trail Grapplers - total cost - roughly $1900
I'd recommend a smaller tire, to anyone trying to do the same, cuz I really had to hack the hell outta my front inner fender wells & mud flaps, for the 295/70R18's to be able to turn.

Front Strut Spacers (leveler kit) + Installation + alignment - roughly $475

Intake : K&N Cold Air Intake system that I installed, roughly $350

Exhaust (Magnaflow True Open-X design - dual 2-1/2" inlet / 3" outlet, flex-pipes, custom repiping, and various welding) - roughly $750

Detroit True-Trac worm gear posi, with 4.10 gears, installed - roughly $1500

Front struts: Rancho RS9000XL, installed, roughly $550 --- Do Not Buy these Struts!!!!!!!
I blew them out in one day, and never even went offroad!!! Now Rancho wants me to pay for a new set, pay the shipping to send the old ones back, & let their techs inspect them for mechanical defects, before they'll issue a credit...
Plus, I spent $60 per strut, to have them installed, and the most their warranty will pay, for the re-installation, is $50, for both!

Now, as for the posi, So far, I love it! the gearing makes a HUGE difference in the performance of the truck!
The only thing that I have noticed, so far, is that my cruise control don't seem to work, and the "SET" light keeps flashing when I try to set it...

They closed at 5:00, so it was already too late to call them, when I first noticed it, so I'll have to call them back tomorrow, to see what the deal is there.

And as for the long term, I'll have to wait and see just how things pan out before I'd recommend following in my footsteps...
It may turn out that the speed sensor in the trans is recording a problem, when compared to the readings from the speed sensors in each individual wheel, because of the change in the gear ratio... I don't know, but as soon as I do, I'll post what I find.

If you're looking for recommendations, I'd go with the True-Trac, the front strut spacers, better rims & tires, the Exhaust & Intake systems, and some reasonable struts (which I'd buy from a place capable of installing them - to keep the warranties all in one place! rather than ordering them from a parts house, and having a completely different shop install them, like I did!).
But, as you can see, it adds up pretty quick!
I've already invested almost $5600, and I still can't get that Stillen supercharger off my wish-list!

While I'm happy with most of the results, I would have definitely done things a little different, if I had the opportunity to do it all over again!
