Remote control plastic cover breakdown

Like every other buyer, I received 2 key fob remote controls for my Titan when I bought it in 2004. The plastic on both has just about broken into little bits, leaving very little plastic covering the control/key fob at the top where the key ring is supposed to be attached. Has anyone else had this problem? How do I fix it? New remotes are expensive!!!
