I've got the K&N cold air intake system on my truck, and I've added my own touch to the exhaust system, which is a custom dual exhaust, and a single magnaflow muffler.
Before I put all the work into it, I was averaging about 16-17 mpg... After I put all the intake & exhaust parts on it, it went up, but only to about 18mpg.
Then, once I put the larger tires and rims on it, it went way down, to about 12-14...
and I turned around, and just put the new gear set in the diff, which gives me a lot more towing power, but now I'm getting about 11mpg... Which really sucks!
Gas, that is!
My biggest problem with getting better gas mileage, after the exhaust and intake mods, was that I loved the sound of it, and couldn't get my foot off the throttle! I made it one whole tank, being easy on it, and took note of how many miles I got out of that particular tank of gas... but then I was right back to mashing the throttle, just because I loved the thrill of the sound & the increase in power.
I haven't had any problems with my exhaust cracking, yet, but it hasn't really been that long since I redesigned my exhaust... Only time will tell, I guess.
As for a computer update, or programmer, I've thought about it... but I can't justify spending the money for something like that, until I see factual numbers showing an actual improvement, not just another biased ad or commercial, put on by the manufacturer of those products...
How did you decide on the magnaflow? I know I will have the same problem when I get around to putting on my exhaust. I love that rumble of a good sounding truck. I just got my truck a few months ago. My truck is an 06, but only has 23k miles on it. I don't get to drive it much because I am all ways in my service van, but I like it better and better every time I drive it. I am going to get a leveling kit put on here soon to get the process rolling.
When I first started looking at exhaust systems, I priced all the packaged "cat-backs", but after seeing the prices range from $600-$1400, I got a little discouraged.
I went to RedMuff, yeah, I know... (Redlands Muffler) and I talked to the guys there for a few...
I thought about a flowmaster, but he said that it wasn't "nuthin but a name", and that he's had a lot of comebacks - the internal baffles inside the muffler break the welds, and start rattling, and sounding like crap...
He recommended the Magnaflow muffler, citing that they are built better, last longer, deliver a good quality rumble, and are, for the most part, less expensive.
He said he could throw on just the muffler, in place of the stock muffler, and add a curved pipe and tip, for $200...
But I took a day to think about it, then I came across the same system in a catalog, for $1200! (but that was $1200 for the full dual exhaust system, from the cat - back...)
I went back to RedMuff, talked to them about it, and showed him the cat-back system I found. He said he could build that exact same system, and use the open-x, dual 2-1/2" inlet/dual 3" outlet - muffler, with some nice chrome tips... for $400, out the door!
I didn't wanna spend that much, but for 1/3rd the price, of just the parts alone, I was sold!
I love my exhaust!!!
Probably a little too much!
Every time I step on the throttle, for no good reason other than just to hear that rumble, I can't help but think, "There went another dollar!"
But then I laugh whenever I set off someone's car alarm, and I think to myself, "That's worth at least 50 cents!"
So... At least I'm getting some kind of a return on my investment, lol
that is awesome that is how I feel about it, it really is worth something to here the rumble expecialy if it sets off car alarms. I read one of your letters on what you did to put some flex in your system. I have been thinking about doing my own also I have a wire feed welder and think I could do it also any pointers? was the diagram for a titan? where did you find it?
Well... When selecting your flex pipes, make sure they only have the steel braiding on the outside. If it has them on the inside, then as they flex, the braiding on the inside will collapse, creating a restriction...
When you cut off the resonators, use a 2" long piece that fits perfectly into both the pipe, and the flex-pipe, about 1 inch into each other (roughly 2-1/8" diameter pipe, I think)... So you'll need roughly about 4 of them.
When you put it on, rough fit the loose pipes, and reinstall them to the cats and the exhaust flange, tack weld them in place, then pull them back off, for the finish welding... Try to make sure you grind off & fill any boogers, cuz those are usually where you develop little pin-hole leaks.
As far as the diagram, if you're talking about one of the hand-drawn pics I posted... yeah, sorry, I'm no artist... that's my rough interpretation of a Nissan Titan exhaust manifold... As soon as you remove yours, you'll instantly know what I was trying to exhibit there, although my drawing isn't at all precise...
Anything else, just ask!
I might not be able to get back to ya right away, but I'll do my best to help!
I've actually done a lot more to my truck lately, just put on some Icon/CST front coilover's, and some new upper control arms... But when I try to upload photos of the new stuff, or photos of the exhaust project, it won't let me!
I've tried contacting SightVision, but haven't gotten any response, yet... Kind of a bummer, cuz I try to take pictures of all my projects, but when you can't post them, how can you help anybody else, who's thinking of doing the same thing, but wants to see the end result?
Hopefully it'll get fixed REAL SOON...
Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm a show-off, lol...
But I like to do it in a helpful way, not like some people, who are like, "Ha! Mine's better than yours, see? SEE!?"
lol
I like to show what I've done to my truck, compare notes, & if anybody wants to know how, or just wants some advice, I can try my best to point them in the right direction...
If this don't get resolved sometime soon, I'll probably look into putting all my project pics on another site, & post a link on my profile page.
